Heavy clouds over the Left Bank (Rive Gauche), Paris, France

Walking the few hundred meters from the Centre Pompidou to the Notre Dame Cathedral, we reach the shore of the Seine river and, looking west, we have this magnificent view of the city of Paris. Despite the name “Le Pont Neuf” (New Bridge), this 16th century bridge is actually the oldest one still standing in Paris. It crosses the Seine river at the northern end of the “Île de la Cité”, the island in the middle of the river that was, between 250 and 225 BC, the birthplace of Paris, then known as Lutetia and, during the medieval period, the heart of the city. The late afternoon sun illuminates the 107 meters high “Dôme des Invalides”, that houses the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769 - 1821), and the magnificent landmark of Paris, the Eiffel tower (330 meters) in the distance.
